laptop VGA out to panasonic screen???RGB help?
So I bought the panasonic cq-vmd9000u in-dash moyotorized screen with dvd decoder. It has two composite inputs (RCA) and a 13 pin RGB input for the optional (only they don't make it for the US market) navigation system. I'm trying to get higher res from my laptop to the screen but can't get it through the RCA input and need to use the RGB on thre unit.
If anyone is capable of hacking this for me I will pay good money!
I need to go from VGA out on the laptop to panasonic rgb (13pin) in.
wish me freakin luck...
Ash

the RCA inputs are there and work, but they're noisy... The image gets blury. If I could use the RGB input on the back it would br higher resolution and a sharper picture... this way I could read the street names when I plug my laptop in with the GPS.
I think I found the solution... Did you know that if you call panasonic service you can buy the service supplement for any product on paper or disc??? Pretty cool!!! I just ordered the entire wiring breakdown for the whole unit... including the rear pinout on CDrom.
I think I'll be able to hack it after that.
thanks,
Ash

I've worked in arcade repair for 3 years... and I've actualy been working on a converter for RGB (what arcade machines use) to NTSC (the yellow RCA jack that US TVs use)
There are 2 main differences between VGA and RGB:
1. resolution, VGA tends to be far higher than RGB, depending on what RGB it's expecting you'll have to play around with the output settings on your laptop
2. H-sync, VGA uses both a horizontal sync and a Vertical sync while RGB uses a single C-Sync (composite sync). This you will actualy have to convert
problem one can pretty much be solved by playing around with your output signal and probelm 2 can be solved by making a simple converter...
I've never made one but I've seen one before and I dont seem to remember it being that complicated.
if you want more info on this try doing a search for MAME (multi arcade machine emulation) cabinets. MAME runs on a PC and a lot of times people will install it with a real Arcade monitor. This causes them to have to convert the PC VGA signal to the Arcade monitor RGB signal. I'm sure if you just did a google search for "VGA to RGB" and or "MAME cabinet" you'd find what you're looking for
I'll keep my eyes open ")

here are some good links I found:
diagrams to do it yourself:
http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/c.../vga2rgbs.html
or you could buy one and make some small conversions:
http://www.pchcables.com/6footvgato5b.html
I'm assuming you're RGB connector is the old style 13 pin "looks like a VGA" connector. if so and you buy one you'll have to cut the BNC connectors and solder it into a 13 pin connector. Almost NOTHING uses the 13pin anymore when dealing with RGB. RGB is typicaly reserved for High Quality feeds and so they use the high quality BNC lines. the 13 pin was used before VGA and sometimes now in tight spots (like a car unit). there are even a few other versions: 13pin (phylips), 15pin(will fit a VGA but wont work right), 25pin(sony), S-Cart (european hi-def), and 5 separate BNC lines.
good luck to you... if you have any questions or need any help just ask ")

wow... Those are the same two sites I found in my jorney... Although they don't help with the imidiate problem which is the pinout of the 13 pin input. That conector is round and has proved to be unique to panasonic. It's round, about the size of microphone/midi jack and has three rows of four pins and a sinlge pin centered under them. Very strange. I'm glad to say that once I get the service manual for the deck I'll have everything I need and will probly end up trying to make male connector to use with the plug so I don't have to cut it off the back of the deck and solder to it. This will probly be the most difficult part of this mod. Now that I know what wires go where, I just have to get them there.
It looks like it's going to work out well,
Thanks again for the help and all the good research!

here are some pin outs
http://www.hut.fi/Misc/Electronics/c...b_pinouts.html
it covers a "din" pin out thats round if that's not what you're looking for then:
http://www.computerrepairservice.com...Connector.html
if you scroll downa little bit they have a list of all sorts of video types.
I think the easiest way to do what you're doing
(if you have no luck getting the right pinout) would be to find a plug that fits and use alagator clips on the wires and play around until the signal looks right. You basicaly just have R G B and Sync and the rest are ground so...
