Help removing stock tape player on a 98 RS
Help removing stock tape player on a 98 RS
Hey guys.
I just picked up a 98 RS that has the stock tape player and I'm trying to install my old head unit from my previous car. I found the subaru wiring diagram and everything, but I can't get the old tape player out.
I assumed part of the front dash needs to be removed, so I looked around for screws to remove it. I found two in the compartment above the middle vents and also found two next to the cup holder, but they only seem to make the dash area loose. I can't tell if I should just apply a little pressure to pop it off (scary
) or if I'm missing some screws.
I'd post pics for everyone of what I'm talking about, but I recently moved and have yet to find my digital camera.
Any help would be appreciated.

1- remove the two screws from under the cover of your armrest that holds the trim panel for your ebrake and remove the two screws from the bottom of your armrest compartment.
2- pull off the trim panel that is under your ebrake and disconect the harness for your mirrors.
3- remove the screws that you see that are under that panel
4- pull up your shift boot panel, you don't have to take it all the way off, just turn it so you can get at the two screws that are under it, neart the base of your center console.
5- remove those two screws that were under your shift boot.
6- pull off the trim that surounds your radio.
7- Now, all that is left to do is remove the screws that hold the radio in place.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to think the post was going to be lost in the mass.
I actually took off almost everything you listed, but I didn't take off the two screws under the shift boot. It seemed to me that they were unrelated to the trim around the radio. I guess I was wrong. I'll try it again this afternoon.
Thanks again for your help!
