Generally you turn on an amp form either a power ant lead or a remote turn on lead. Neither of which ar on a factory headunit.

So your solution would be to just hook it up to an ignition wire. Find a wire that goes hot when you turn on the car.

Or the other solution would be to pick up a line output convertor that turns normal speaker outputs to line level outputs. Some of these have remote leads on them for amps.

Or lastly, better amps can actually sense an input when using their speaker level inputs and will turn on by itself.

so now i thought i had it hooked up to speaker imputs but i guess i am wrong b/c it still won't turn on, the speaker inputs on the back of the radio are the black ones with red dots correct???
Any diagrams would rock
Thanks

i cant help you with speaker input diagrams but search pinout here and on www.nasioc.com

be sure and check your ground on the amp; as well as the hot line (with a multimeter). If either are messed up obviously it wont turn on.

theres a good (as in stock) ground point in your trunk - just remove the plastic liner on the sill of the trunk and you will see a wire attached to one of the bolts - thats a ground wire...I attached my ground from my basslink to that bolt

Let me know if it works for you it works perfect in MY01 RS so it should work good in your car it took me a while to find it after checking every wire going into the stock deck.
