Which head unit?
What are good head units to get for the WRX wagon? I would like a double DIN unit, but there are not that many models I have seen. Any suggestions on those?
If not, is it better to go with a single DIN unit, and have a custom bracket made? How will it end up looking?

you dont need a custom bracket made for a single din unit...u just need to get a tray on the bottom...the ISO mount on aftermarket decks line up perfectly with the WRX's stock mounting bracket...I went with an Alpine CDA-9807, before that I had the Kenwood KDC-Z919....both are MP3 decks, I think the alpine is sweet, and it matches the factory dash trim on the WRX...

Also, will any head unit do, or will do I have to stick with a head unit that has a built in amp?
I'm eyeing the Alpine CDA-7995, but it requires an external amp. Any suggestions on whether this model will work as a directl replacement of the factory head unit without any other changes?

You need to stick with a head unit with an internal amp for a direct replacement. Otherwise you need to buy an external amp to power your speakers. As for the tray it is a black compartment to store things in. My RS came standard with that tray and a single din stereo. What I am doing is putting a Pioneer DEH-P8500MP with XM Radio as a single din then a Equilizer in the other hole instead of the tray. The only thing is then it requires external amps to power the speakers. Hope this answers your questions.
