Final opinions needed. Choice of Kicker subs.Any help is appreciated.
My name is Matt Durbin and i am relitively new to the car audio scene. I have played around with some different subwoofers, infinity kappa perfect 12.1's and 10" eclipse aluminums. I have not been pleased yet. I have a sony 1600 watt max 900 watt rms (into 2 ohms) amplifier that I want to use for my system. I want to use some of your L7's but am having a hard time figuring out just how to go. Maybe a 15" because I have close to 1000 watt's rms in a vented enclosure that is tuned to around 32 hz? Or maybe just 1 12" so I know that I have enough power again in a vented enclosure that is tuned to around 32 hz. Or Maybe I could get 2 10" L7's in avented enclosure that is tuned to around 32 hz. I have these three options, and, because you are the experts, I figure that you could tell me the best possible set up given my amp. I am looking for sound that is loud! Spl would be my number 1 priority, but sq can not be bad, and I know it wont be with Kicker subs.
I'm sure you like your amp, but i would look into a better one. Sony car amps aren't very good. If you just want to be loud get a band pass box.
Another thing to think about is what ever set-up you choose, most likely you want to change it. Most people that are looking for high Spl always want to go louder.
Just my 2 cents

Justgo was rather polite.....no offense but that is not the amp you want to run if you're gonna be playing loud. Your amp is just as important as the sub/enclosure you plan to run. Didnt you metion in the other thread you had a RF too? The Sony won't last........it'll be inefficient, run hot, and it won't sound good (especially when its pushed).
Just because it says its 1600w max 900w rms doesnt mean much.....there are tons of amps out there claiming to push 1000w. What voltage is this taken at, how long can it play at high volumes, and what type of SQ are you gonna get from it. In no way am I trying to put you or the amp down.....just trying to warn you before you go through all work
I'm one of those do it right the first time guys (I hate having to do things over, spend money again, etc). But then again, it might not hurt to try the amp, and when it craps out replace it....atleast it wont go to waste and it'll give you time to save more money and find the perfect match.
While the RF amps arent what they used to be, I'm sure the BD is many times better than the sony. I'm sure others will agree that there are a number of amps out there with much lower power ratings that will play louder and clearer than the sony amp....I've heard it. The difference can be night and day sometimes, the only way to find out is to hear it.
Oh yeah, good luck with whatever you choose

Yes, I KNOW!!!!! anyways, I want to know about your opinions on the L7's! forget the amp type.

I used to run 2 8 in L7s in ported boxes with a zr240 on each of them and it was loud. Really loud. Nobody believed that it was just 2 8s. Right now I am running 1 8 in L7 in a sealed box and zr240 in my rex and it sounds pretty good. Not near as loud as before but still pretty good. I'm sure you will be please with any L7. But with your current amp I would probably run no larger than a 12 if that. But like they said before you need a better amp. You could run that sony amp and a 12 in L7 but I bet a 10 in. L7 and a Kicker KX600.1 would be louder. Just my 2 cents.

very doubtful. the displacement of the 10 is much less. Wattage isnt everything. doubling wattage only increases output by 3 db.

You are right they 10 in. would be less displacement and wattage isn't everything. BUT matching wattage to a speaker is very important. The kicker KX600.1 would match the 10 perfectly while your sony would not match that 12 in very well. It may do well on a 10 though.

And if the 10 in. with the kicker amp wasn't louder I would bet money that the 12in with a sony amp would be about the same if not less. Because people who want really loud bass run 12 in solos with 1500 watt amps all the time. With the 12 in. your gonna need a really good amp, a capacitor, and a bunch of money. But I mean if all you want is spl and you are willing to spend the money I would go with the solox anyway.

Oh it would sound good. I promise. I have heard that you want in the middle between the rms and max power of the speaker. So lets say that is 1000 watts. Now if your sony amp actually puts out 900 watts then yes this will be a good match. But I really doubt that it does put out 900 watts as I have had some sony products in the past and they seem to over rate their products. Now even if the sony amp puts out 800 watts then it will still sound good. I'm sorry if you think I am saying that it won't sound good. It will. But I believe that with another amp it will sound better. Now if you are hell bent on staying with that sony amp then great. It will sound good. I mean we have gotten off topic here and its my fault. The real question was about the L7. I can tell you that you will love the L7. I can't vouch too much for its sound quality but if you want a loud sub then this is it. In my opinion kicker products are the best for the money. When I got my zr 240 it was rated at 240 watts into 1 channel at 4 ohms. When I got the amp and they sent me the test sheet it said 345 watts into 1 channel at 4 ohms so it was obviously under rated. Kicker is famous for this and I believe they do it on their speakers also. They may tell you it can handle 1500 watts but I bet it can handle much more. But in the end you will love the L7 and I'm sure your ear drums will hate you for it.

Wait, now im confused again. CHOICE 1.......... 1 12" L7 (750 watts rms, 1500 max) in the appropriate sized box tuned around 30 hz, with my sony amp
Choice 2.......1 15" L7 (1000rms 2000max) in the appropriate sized box tuned around 30 hz, with my sony amp
For the most spl i would go with choice 2, for spl and sq go for choice 1?

About the L7.....it really comes down to your taste. While I once was a fan of Kicker (about 10yrs ago) I feel they now offer good (not great) performance with average SQ.....especially when you get into ported/vented enclosures. I know your main goal is SPL....so you really need to determine what level of SQ you trully desire.
I know its a little late in the game, but have you listened to JL 12W6V2s in their vented enclosure? I'm partial to sealed enclosures (I like my SQ
) but I was quite impressed with their output and SQ in their enclosure (running off solid xtant and JL amps). I believe they are comparable in price to the L7s....just one more option to make your life more difficult
Having to choose a sub(s) sucks!! I'm kinda debating what to do too.....and the more I think about it the tougher it gets....
