Center channel for surround sound
I thought it would be kinda cool to use a gauge pod as a center channel speaker location. But now I realize that if I want to use the actual pod then the speakers wouldn't be much bigger than 60mm gauges. Has anybody tried installing a speaker flush firing towards the windshield in the OE clock location? Any problems? I would like to fit 5-1/4 inch. Is there room?

Its been done. I have seen a 4' and i think a 51/4' as well. There is enough diameter for the larger size to fit, the issue will be the mounting depth and the size of the magnet. However you probably wont use a great speaker for a center channel seeing as how it wont need to handle huge amounts of power, therefore the magnet assembly wont be large.
I am installing a center channel myself, but it will be about 4-6 weeks before I do so; waiting on head unit etc..
So maybe that will help, If anybody else has ideas, experiences, or pics lets us know
Thanks

ah, the center channel. i tend to disagree with the previous post that says you probably won't use a great speaker for a center channel.
there's one important thing to remember about doing any audio system - speaker matching! even if a speaker is going to be "rear fill" or "center fill" if you're going to go through the time and expence of getting a center channel, make it the same type as the left and right mains, and in turn, make your "rears" the same.
now, by same type, i don't mean the same speaker. often you can get a smaller version. for example if you do 5.25 two-ways in the doors, you should do the 4" two-way version in the center. and, not the "cheap" version either. you want to shoot for the same tweeter, xover, and even same woofer design.
the biggest mistake i see in car stereo is that people mix brands front and rear. or they buy the "budge" version of what they put in the front.
here's a tip, when you are listening to one pair of brand-x that you want to have for the fronts, have the salesperson switch to the pair you want for the rear, if they don't sound the same except for perhaps a little less bass for example, switch to another speaker!
even if a speaker is not going to be getting a lot of highs, or a lot of lows, you still have all the other spectrum of sound to deal with.
also, keep in mind that bouncing sound off the wind-shield is not the best choice. BUT i've seen many systems that really did sound good with a center-channel sound processor.
on the other hand, by the time you buy a decent processor, a matching pair of speakers (with one going to waste!) you might be better off spending the extra $500 on bigger subs or better front speakers

I totally agree with you. That's why I wanted to cram a 5-1/4 inch speaker in there, because I'll probably use the same one in the doors. I've seen the DIN-sized center channels from Clarion & Kenwood but I'm worried about the speakers having different characters.
