I would say sony or an alpine deck would be good. Here is a sony that i had which i have no complainst about and was a very good deck. Sony used to make good amps and decent speakers. Now since the explode series came out all they make are good decks and cd changers. Their speakers and amps have gone down teh crapper.
Sony CDX-MP70 (CD Receiver • Multi-Color Motorized Face • EQ7 • SSIR-EXA Tuner • XM Ready • Remote)

MP3 Radios

I would look at the new Eclipse's. CD3403 $209.99 or the CD3413 for $249.99. You get a three year parts warr. and one year antitheft warr. plus they are the best sounding radios out.
They have a silver trim on the face that will look great in the Subaru dash. Just an idea.......

Cool Alpine baby

I'd have to throw my vote in favor of the alpine CDA-9807. Plays MP3, and WMA, has a much better CD Signal to Noise ratio than any of the Sony's in the pricerange, and just plain sounds great (like all Alpine decks).

Here is a link to it on Cruthfield's site.
