Aux in added to '05 WRX 6-disc changer (not FM modulator)

After reading about some of the hardwired aux in mods some of the legacy
guys were doing, I decided to try something similar. This is for the
6 disc indash changer model p-133.

Basically, I spliced in a simple mixer circuit into the audio lines between
the CD player and the radio/amp. I then made a CD containing 1 long
silent track, and then when I play the silent track only the added aux. in
is heard. This is an adaption of the mods. done by centerpunch and
jazzymt on the legacy forums.

Attached is a picture of the bottom of the circuit board. This mod is not for
the faint of heart (I cut traces on the radio). Jazzymt made kit that makes
it simply unpluging a cable (internal to the radio), but I am not sure if
this kit will work on the WRX radios. I am in contact with him to try to
determine if his kit will work, and will update this post when I find out.

The link to one of the legacy discussion is:

Note that at this point I DO NOT KNOW if this specific modification will work.

Jazzymt sent me a unit, and I verified that it works. I sent him a bunch of disassembly photos so that he could put together instructions for the WRX. (His legacy instructions were very nice.)
The install is really easy - the only tricky part is that the WRX radio doesn't have much room
to route the cable out the back - you need a pretty thin one.

He now has a website, and I see that he already has satisfied WRX customers.

geek bear,
so what location do you have the aux cable to? did you have to drill a hole somewhere to connect your ipod or whatever device you hooked up? do you have any pics with your device hooked up after everything was done? i'm thinking about ordering this board today.
THANKS!!

I used a very thin cable that I clipped from a set of headphones. It had two wires next to each other, rather than the one big round one that most extensions seem to be made from. I was able to just snake it out the back of the radio between on of the connectors and the radio back plate. You can probably have a larger cable go out through the side of the radio, but I'm not sure if that will get in the way of mounting the radio.
I removed the ashtray, and run the cable out from there (there is a big opening behind the ashtray, so no cutting or drilling required.) I can coil it up and store it where the ashtray used to be when I am not using it. I didn't put any ground loop isolators in, but I don't have it hooked up to a charger so I don't need them.

Awesome!

I was just getting ready to throw down coin on a new head unit after suffering with my hardwired fm modulator for the past year. I'm ordering up one these bad boys and cross linking this thread to another one where I just made the request for such a product.

Well, I just installed the aux board. It took a little over an hour. So for all of you inexperienced fellas like me, thats about how long it'll take. It just took so long cuz I was extra careful not to break anything, but it can definitely be done much quicker....MUCH MUCH quicker. The instuctions are very clear, not hard at all. instead of running the cable through the ashtray I snaked it through the side panel of the shifter, no cutting or drilling.

I ordered the ground loop isolator, but after taking the stereo apart I have no idea where that thing goes. So I'm thinking of sending it back, if anyone can help me out with this I'd appreciate it.
