Get an alarm that has either a built in or stand alone paging system. Better yet get an alarm and a separate, stand alone paging system. In my opinion a pager is the only worthwhile defense... well a pager system, cell phone and baseball bat

[edit] p.s. er yeah "2-way" means it has a paging system.

I havent seen them in person but those 2-way pagers sure look big. Not something I want in my pocket everytime I leave my car. Or are the pictures deceiving?

well, if you were to get an alarm system and a standalone paging system you will be carrying 2 items, the alarm key fob and the paging device. you're better off getting a 2way system that has everything in 1. yes, the remote is a little large but definitely worthwhile.
everyone seems to be divided about which 2way system to go with. i've used the viper 2way systems and i'm quite satisfied with what it does though it doesn't have a useful immobilizer system.

The one I have is pretty smally. I carry it in my pocket w/ me cell phone and my keys with the alarm fob in the other pocket.
What I like about having separate systems is that one becoming compromised doesnt necessarily compromise the other.

that's not necessarily true, pagers typically need to check the alarm's siren output in order for it to page you. usually the pager's input requires a siren duration of more than a few seconds otherwise the arm/disarm chirps will cause the pager to unnecessarily send pages.
combining the units will reduce the amount of unnecessary electronics to be installed into your vehicle and if the alarm system was properly installed then you shouldn't have to worry about it being compromised.

check out viper's 791xv, or the python 881xp or the clifford rsx3.5 for 2 way lcd alarm/remote start. if you don't need the remote start you can go with the viper 690xv. most of these alarms offer decent 2 way coverage. if you're looking for extended coverage consider purchasing a gps/cellular tracking unit.

What I like about having the separate systems is that I can set the pager for a higher sensitivity than the alarm system. I live in a densely populated area and nothing gets stuff thrown from a 3rd story window down on your windows in the middle of the night like pissing off a neighbor with a sensative alarm.
So I have my separate pager system set to a higher sentivity. I can make it as sensative as I like with out annoying anyone but myself

Viper, python, rattler, wasp, hornet, clifford, valet, sidewinder .. and most of the others are owned by Directed Electronics so basically I think they have the same insides. The diferent brands are just grades of quality and features.

Hey Huck, I've got the Clifford. I didn't get the pager for it yet, or the remote start but I got everything else for it... I can always add those units on.
