10" Eclipse subs...question about ohms, correct watts?
Sorry I am on here so much, but some I am a sound system newbie and love the advice you guys are so willing to give out. Alright. I bought (1) 10" Eclipse SW8102DVC subwoofer. Now, I am totally confused about the amperage needed to power this sub. I am especially confused at how many ohms it is. I have heard it is 4 ohms, I have heard it is 2 ohms. From eclipse-web.com here is their chart....My sub is on the left...

I am thinking this would make it an 2 ohm, because if it says 4 ohms/coil would that mean because my sub is dual voice coil I have 4.0ohms/2 coils=2 ohms??? Or would it be that each one of my coils would be 4 ohms??? So I would have to buy a monoblock amp that would support 8 ohms? GOD!!!!!! I am so confused about this. I have read also they are 4 ohms+ 4 Ohms.....so does that mean If I have an amp, that powers "500 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms " does than mean each coil is getting 250 watts??? and acording to the website here are the specifications.....

-Speaker Impedance -- 2 - 8 ohm mono
-Frequency Response -- 5 - 300Hz
-Input level range -- 0.3 - 6V (RCA), 1.2 - 12V (High level)

-Current drain (at rated output 2 ohm) -- 90 A
So tell me how much power I will be running to my sub if you could, and also if anyone could explain to me the ohms for my sub.

Your sub has two 4ohm coils. This allows you to use the sub as 2ohms, 4 ohms, or 8ohms. For max power out of an amp you want lower ohms. With the amp that you have hook the coils up in parrellel. this will allow you to use the amp and sub to there potential. Your amp can put out up to 900W. This would give each coil 450W. How can you make a dual 4ohm subwoofer a 4ohm load, just hook up one VC??? There are only two ways to hook up a sub series and paralell, in this case 8ohms or 2ohms.
Also Wrxplaya, your amp is rated at 900W RMS @ 2ohms and its a D class so it will probally produce somthing close to that. Your sub is only rated to handle 500W RMS, if you give it all 900W it won't last long "maybe a faw months" then it will probally seize up due to excess heat. However you are not completely SOL in this setup you can just turn the input sensitivity on your amp down to around half way and take it easy on the volume.
You could also buy another sub but then your faced with 1ohm, 4ohm, or 16 ohm. loads - its unfortunate that your amp can't handle a 1ohm load.

Thanks, however I am counting on one thing. This is a sony amplifier. I have owned sony in the past and have come to expect a little bit of inflation on the numerbs. I will DEFINATELY not turn the imput sensitivity all the way up. I will just turn it up to what sound the best, thanks.
