i don't get it. there is no relation between e and sigma

unless e and sigma arent' just random variables, do they stand for anything in particular?
Definition: Let f(x) be defined for all x in some open interval containing the number a, with the possible expception that f(x) may or may not be defined at a. We shall write:

lim f(x) = L
x->a

if, given any number e > 0, we can find a number 'g' > 0 such that f(x) satisfies:

|f(x) - L| < e

whenever x satisfies

0 < |x-a| < g

---------------------------------------------

talk about primitive? the last time i did limits was sophomore year in high school... 1994-1995...
