Redondo Beach Wrenchfest/BBQ/Project EJ-BRAT unveiling 2/24/07

Some of you have been to my place before, some haven't.

Well come be a part of history as I put the finishing touches on the EJ18 powered BRAT w/5 inch lift.

The will be some space for other work as well.

Some the stuff that we have done in the past is coil-over installs, ball joint replacements, steering bushing install. Let me know who is interest and who can lend a hand.

As usual I will provide the sausages and hamburgers. Please tell me what you will be bringing.

address is 2615 Curtis Ave, Redondo Beach. 90278. Phone number is 310-292-5258.

I'm sure you're not the only one bringing sausage.

So things are looking really good for the 24th.

I got the headers from Garage Tuning. I am getting axles from Wan Lin and the cat back WRX exhaust from a dude on NASIOC.

I need an ignitor, but I have a guy tracking one down for me. I also need to get longer shocks for the back.

I plan to get some fuel injection hoses today and install the fuel pump and rehose the carby lines.

In terms of the lift. The rear lift blocks are still being finished and then installed.

Well one step forward, two steps back.

Rear suspension done. I found out that the rear shocks from a 1975 Chevelle will fit w/a little drilling out of the top mount. It works nicely with the lift.

I tried installing the tranny crossmember and it didn't work right.

When I made the lift blocks for the tranny, the holes may have been drilling wrong. so I have to take the blocks out and oval the holes to make it work.

But other than that things are still looking good for the 24th.

Update for those who didn’t make it to the BBQ

Had a good turn out.

Not much work done on other people’s cars.

Dan, with the pristine Blue WRX wagon helped me with getting fuel lines looked at.

We first tried to use the existing BRAT charcoal canister and stuff, but that turned out to the be a huge PITA. After looking at a Legacy motor, I decided retro-fit EJ stuff instead.

The best part of the weekend was I hooked up the engine harness and the ECU and I was able to get spark to the plugs. So I just need to get the fuel stuff resolved and it should start.

Went to the Pick a Part and found a Legacy sitting there. Got the charcoal canister and some assorted fuel parts for about $20.00.

In terms of wheels I decided to go with 225/75/16 wheels. The tires are equal to a 29 inch tire and they will be mounted on WRX rims painted white.

Muffler will be a 2002 WRX exhaust. Will use the exhaust from where it bolts to the down pipe to the muffler. I have get a 90 degree elbow made so that I can bolt it up where it meets the headers. It would be nice to get some larger diameter headers later on b/c the 1.8L headers are pretty puny.

Estimated time of completion would be 2 weeks.

I just started it up.

Attempt number one was yesterday where I tried w/a friend of mine. I got the fuel pump working and it started up w/starter fluid. I was not able to get it run w/o it so that was slightly disappointing. We determined that we the fuel tank was low. I guess a bunch of fuel evaporated while it was sitting.

Attempt number two was today. Put some fuel in the tank and got tried it again. This time it would start up, but wouldn't idle.

After fidgeting around with some of the connections and thinking a bit, I thought hmm.. let me hook the air flow sensor.

Well it lit up and idle.

Now to iron out the million little things and put the interior back together.
