Question new here, hello! Got some Q's on UTEC tuning...

Hello,

I swear I've registered here before... oh well, anyways...

I've been on NASIOC for a while, but mostly just lurking there... so, here's a lil about myself.

04 WRB STi
Working as a sales rep and R&D for velocitymotoring.com
graduated UC-Irvine
USMC reserves
Have worked retail sales, IT consulting, management, security...

so anyways, here's my question...

I have UTEC installed, and need to get a tune... I was thinking, OpenECU flash for better fuel economy when TPS is under 30% on one of the UTEC maps, and another UTEC map tuned for pump gas. I only have a set of headers which were instaled on my car for testing purposes and just left on cuz I'm too lazy to take them off... Ideally, I'd want to increase boost slightly and get rid of the knocking that's showing up with the base map.

Any suggestions on where I can get this done??

im using link now and will be going back to stock ecu

so yeah i have ran the gauntlet of EM piggy back stand alone and now reflash
do you have the utec?

i can help if you are going to do your own tuning
but if you havent before jsut ahve ichi do it

well you can turn up the boost but you ahve to add fuel and pull timing out

i have never tuned a 2.5 but on my 2.0 when the boost comes on im luck to get 4-7* advanced on the timing

i read about ichi as well, what shop does he work at?

I have a UTEC right now.

As for tuning by myself, I don't feel comfortable doing that since I don't have a wideband available to use...

hmmm well rich is safe and the air fuel ratio sensor can get you close enough

but ichi doesnt work out of a "shop"
where highspeed racer x and mino do thier work

its a shop but not a full time shop

what mods do you have?

mods?? lol.

well, for power, I've always read that EM was the first thing to do, especially sinc eI wanted to stay as stealth as possible, which meant no turboback for me... the only power-related mods I have other than the UTEC is a KN drop-in filter (actually, a FRAM unit, but same cotton gauze construction, but orange), and a header that I had installed for company R&D purposes.

I know a header is one of the last power mods on the list, but meh... was doing it for testing, and just left it on.

I figure that the utec can control boost to some extent right? so i wouldn't need a boost controller. I also have a variety of cheap mechanical boost gauges at my office which I'm deciding if I should install or not, and if I do, it would be in the glove compartment for the passenger to track boost only.

hmm, so how would they do the tune? street tune? if it's a street tune, can't I just use UTI? :-P but I'd really want that fuel-economy OpenECU programming though...

utec uses a bleeder on the hardware side

and it can control the boos through the software

whats UTI? and you drive it on the street not the dyno

UTI
http://www.dezignduo.com/UTI/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=273

street tuning for utec systems.

What do you think about that? seems like a lot of people like that software... I'm a lil skeptical about trusting the factory a/f sensor though, and frankly, I don't know where to start in terms of street tuning.

since we're all in socal, anyone doing anything tonight? hehe. i'm in northern OC area.

BTW, if any of you need any help with wheel/tire issues, lemme know. I work in the industry, and we have our own mount/balance machines. Nothing's free though, but I'll trade favors for favors. hehe.

OH and your stock ecu uses teh AF ratio sensor

but yeah i would go wideband to do tuning

well the problem is if you change one parameter you have to change them all
add boost you have to add fuel and take away some timing if it starts to detonate

yeah. I get the gist of the whole tuning. actually built a working MegaSquirt ECU for a turbo BMW E30 project I had going on, but I ended up having to sell the car and all the parts b4 I could really put it together.

as for the bleeder valve onthe UTEC, a general concensus is that it's useful onthe WRX, but not needed on the STi... and has been reported to give problems with the STi. I still haven't figured out why yet, but I'd imagine it having something to do with the STi vs WRX boost controle solenoid works...?

anyways, UTI's comming out with a new version hopefully this weekend, so I'm gonna try to play with that. other than that, I just want my car to not run so darn rich while cruising... gas is $$$ :-(
