Help w/ some investigation issues

So I tried to open a Roth IRA at Scottrade. Their background check found some ish on me and they closed my account. The company that did the background check (an affiliate of EQUIFAX) said I was part of some auto insurance fraud ring. They found some assnut that had the same name as me who happened to live in my area (hence, the person they found IS NOT ME). They told me I was listed in some newspaper article back in 1999. I found the article and it indeed said my name, and even my home city (Rosemead) was mentioned in the article as a city where some of the illegal operations were ran. I am trying to work with the background-check company to clear my name but those *******s tell me that I have to do all my inquiries and such through snail-mail and when they receive my mail, they have up to 30 days to respond! This shiet has been going on since Oct and it doesn't seem like it is getting any closer to getting resolved. I really don't want to hire a private investigator for this ($$$ i am guessing) but I will as my last resort. But how else can I go about clearing my name right now? Have anyone else experienced crap like this? Would you trust those online companies that say you can use their database to run your own private investigations (for a fee of course)? TIA fellas.

I'm sure if you get to someone above the typical telephone operator they can help you out a little bit faster rather than just giving you the usual "please mail in blah blah blah. expect up to 30 days for a response. Have a nice day."

its been my experience with almost everything that once you get by that first layer of highly scripted drones, you can get stuff done.

Yeah, I've tried to go above the drones before. Left numerous vmails to the VP of their dept and the basturd sure loves not calling me back. I am currently trying to contact the DA who worked on that case in 1999 and the writer who wrote the article, hopefully they are both still there.
