downpipe question

i've been looking around all the subaru websites to get started on modding my car. On http://www.gruppe-s.com/subaru.htm all the downpipes are noted as

*This downpipe is legal in California for off-road or race use only. Because of the elimination of catalytic converters, this downpipe may never be installed on a vehicle to be driven on public highways. Please check your local laws

so if i do buy a downpipe do i have to take it off everytime i go get it smoged?

how many here have a full set up of uppipe downpipe and catback?

any other .02 cents are highly invited

its illegal to run with out the cats that said yea you need to put yer stock exhaust back on for smog...I would say 25% of the folks with sport cars have modifed there exhaust one way or a other its one of the first mods for most....

you cant change the cats if your car is under 30k miles or 60k i dont remember im leaing towards 60. so even if you put in a high flow cat its still illegal it doesnt matter that its less illegal. but thats only if the cop is being a dick.

i have turbo back

up pipe is too hard to change out

up / down fun

Dp's and up p's are great. But here is the thing, if a copper gets under the hood of your rig and knows what he is looking for, you get a modified for race ticket and blam, that's alot of money. Most of the time when people get caught here in S.D. the cop pulls the OFFENDER over for loud exhaust. So here is the point, if you want to modify the up's and down's don't put that grapefruit cannon of an exhaust on the rig. Go with something way low profile (Borla hush) or equiv. and spool on my man.

thx alot! ill take everything mentioned into consideration. wvjnky, as for the exhuast i was looking at the borla hush and it ill probly lean towards that but i dont like the dual tip, but if its going to save me ticktes in the long run i guess i can deal with it. thx again.

by the way why cant not remove my cats until 30k or 60k?

Actually Federal Law says that

specific major emissions control components (catalytic converter, electronic emissions control unit and the onboard emissions diagnostic device) are covered by the Federal Emissions Defect Warranty for a period of 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first.

it's all about, what you can and can't get away with, and how much "hassle" you wanna put up with

yeah, anytime you remove the cat, that's a very big no no.......but people do it anyways

some get away with it, some don't. some don't mind having to change out a dp and midpipe for smog, some don't want to go through it

it's up to you as to how far you wanna take it

I have the helix up pipe/downpipe and HKS hiper cat back. If I put my stock downpipe back on for the smog test will I pass the sniffer? right now its raw exhaust, but when the rex was stock it was labeled as a ULEV. the downpipe cats should suffice when smog time comes around, right? nobody's gonna see the uppipe during the smog test, or even know that it had a cat from the factory.

I'm guesstimating 20-25HP to the wheels. havent had mine on the dyno yet but it pulls like an SOB! definately a solid 13 sec car with a little tuning/reflash
