one lane, here's the deal, these cars with AWD are capable of so much more than you are aware. Most cars, with the right tires can handle quite a bit. I grew up in upstate NY, we had snow like wouldn't believe. Road conditions far worse than anything I have seen in the Sierra's. My weapon of choice(by default) was a 1986 Chevy Spectrum(I loved this car). Front wheel drive snow tires ect. See there aren't things called chain control points in Upstate. You get in your car and drive, right along with everyone else. Chain controls are for the amature snow hounds that make thier way up a mountain covered in snow, yet they never even learned how to drive in the rain.
I'll wait for onemanarmy to chime in with his REO70's plowing through 6" of snow on our way to Bear Valley. Not the smartest thing to do, but it can be done.

I wasn't attacking the idea of driving with snow tires in snowy/****ty conditions or all seasons in snow conditions or even the stock re070's. I was just stating the fact just because you drive an awd vehicle you tend to think you're invincible in the icy/slippery/low traction road condition, and that kind of mentality is what will get you stuck in a ditch or worst.
common sense + appropriate tires (chains if needed) in snowy condition = lower your chances of going of the road/crash
over inflated ego and totally depending on awd + summer tires in snow condition = well you get the idea.
and i'd feel safer in a lighter(compared to wagon) fwd car than my heavy *** wagon when driving in heavy snow

Well I want to say something... the state of CA requires any car to keep snow chains in their car when they go to the mountain with snow on the road. AWD + M/S rated tires are ok and they usually let you pass at check point. But there will be people at check point ask you to turn back because you don't have your freaking chains. I never experienced that before but that's what I heard. It's good to have... and you are not really wasting money. I always live in CA so I don't know how it looks like to be in NY winter... but then again... I know how dangerous trapping at a snow mountain can be... why... because I do backcountry snow camping trip =)
