I mostly didn't plan at all! A few friends got me some travel books, which I flipped through, but most of my planning was done after visiting the Melbourne Visitor's Center (located near all the museums in the Central Business District). It's a totally free place to go to, and everyone there is so so so so helpful. You can also book day trips, weekend trips, or buy tickets for virtually anything there. I'm not sure if Sydney, Perth or any of the other larger cities have a Visitor's Center though.

Let me know if you'd like to borrow my books.
