Attn: dog owners

A couple of days ago, I was looking at Einstein's (my corgi) belly and noticed that it was a very dark color on one side (greyish-brownish-slight purple-y color). He's got white fur on his belly and until then, his skin was a light pink color. I asked my coworkers and they said that dogs' skin color can change as they get older. He's about 5 years old. Corgis typically live 12-15 years I think.

He's still acting the same: eats everything, runs on his walk, poops normally, etc. I've pushed down on the discolored part and he doesn't react, so he's not in pain there. He's not licking or scratching that area either.

Has this happened to anyone's dogs?

My sister is taking him to the vet later today, but I figured I'd ask you guys too. I hope he's ok.

Thanks for reading!

I know my dogs have dark spots on their stomachs that tend to move around year over year.. The area isn't raised, or look irritated, actually looks like just normal skin, except for the color. They are kinda like moles in a sense (If i'm actually thinking of the same thing you are describing). It's just skin discoloration. In fact I sorta have the same thing on my shoulder lol.. The pattern changes every few years, but my dermatologist says that its nothing to worry about, it's just skin discoloration.

Hopefully its the same for einstein.. Good thing you are taking him to the vet, at least for piece of mind. I'm sure hes just fine.. I beleive that Ed's dog has the same thing on his belly, if I remember correctly..

Let us know how it goes

Should be fine... Dogs develop those naturally. The vet will get a sample of blood on that spot to see if it's anything serious. Chances are, there is probably nothing to worry about. My dog lived to 14. I kinda miss having a dog.

I got back from the vet (I decided to leave work early) and the doctor said it's just a big bruise and it should go away in a week or so. It could have been from the times he's tripped and fallen off the curb maybe? Either way, it's nothing to worry about, she said. phew.

Thanks for all your input!

I'm a little late reading this, but my first thought when you were describing the area was that it was a bruise( or hematoma as we like to call it). good that you took him into the vet though, you could never be too sure .

my chow and shar-pei have black hair, so I probably wouldnt notice it if they had something like that...
