Do I need 3" exhaust? (just got VF30)
I've been running a Godspeed Uppipe and Downpipe with a Prodrive axel back for over a year now (Cobb reflash as well). Loved it. The Godspeed downpipe is 3", but after that, it steps down to a 2.5" custom pipe to replace the exhaust silencer and meet up with the Prodrive.
A week ago, I just added a VF30 to the setup (w. engine management). I love the sound of the Prodrive axel back, and I love the look of its oval tip, but I'm wondering if having all that 2.5" plumbing is starting to hurt performance now that I've stepped up to a slightly larger turbo.
I simply hate coffee can exhausts with their simple rolled tip and bad sound. The tip on the new Cobb 3" axle back looks like the Prodrive in that it has that double layered tip. Can anyone think of another catback or axel back that would have similar sound and quality look to it? Is the VF30 too small to need a 3" exhaust?

You can get by with your existing exhaust system but there are probably more gains to be had if your engine management was tuned for 3" exhaust. Check with your tuner if you have an off-the-shelf map.
There are catbacks with 3" tubing on the market with either single or dual tips but I am not a fan of the ones with the cut tips featuring a single-wall construction. I have a 3" Strömung dual-tip catback and now that it has a weathered look from being on the car for many months, it can pass for a factory exhaust. It is louder than stock but nowhere near as loud as those grapefruit-shooter mufflers. The only drawbacks are that it comes extremely close to the rear diff because it tucks way up under the car like the factory catback and the tubing necks down at the flange that bolts up to the 3rd cat section on the stock exhaust to maintain compatibility.
There are other 3" dual-tip catback sections out there. A search of this forum will probably yield results.

Thanks for the reply. I'll contact Cobb and see if they feel I'd get any more performance from a 3".
Just to clarify, when I said "double layered tip" I was refering to a tip that is more than just thin rolled steal. Some tips (whether single or double) are nearly 1/2" think because there is more than just one layer of metal making the tip(s). I know I'm not explaining this right!
