Uhhmm,

why a TMIC? Very little hp gain over stock TMIC, even when tuned. I hate to see people buy a TMIC just to turn around and get a FMIC. What are your goals?

That is a dumb statement.

Many people want a bigger TMIC to:

1. Stay stealth. At least in CA it screams "ticket me and send me to the smog referree".

2. Keep stock bumper beam.

3. Have a 30 second install.

A TMIC is more than adequate for a VF34 stage 4.

I have a FMIC,

and stock bumper beam. The proximity of the TMIC to the turbo (let alone a bigger turbo) isn't acceptable to me. I don't have to worry about heat soak, and please don't tell me about more lag (unless you have first hand experience, I do). My car is running great on the stock turbo (just ask the local STI owners here). There was a good article in a recent magazine that showed gains of only ~10hp out of a tuned TMIC. I can run the crap out of my car at the track and still touch the FMIC. It's actually cool to the touch and I'm in Hawaii. But hey, I make "dumb statements" all the time. Whatever.

Oh yeah,

here's my "ticket me and send me to the smog referree" FMIC. Not all intercoolers are silver, shiny, and bling.

San, in CA a front-mount will fail the visual inspection on the smog test. I don't know which other states this applies to.

Your FMIC is a very clean-looking installation.

Sorry,

I'll try to avoid CA. Even one of my car buddies didn't know I had a FMIC until I told him. As soon as I paint the foglight covers it will be stealthy.

FMICs are only advantageous at the drag strip where they won't heat soak as bad as a top mount. However, as SCC showed in the APS top mount article recently, the heat soak comes out of OE top mounts within seconds of moving again. If your front mount (or poorly designed large top mount) gets heat soaked, however, it takes days to cool it off again, all the while causing det and pulled timing. Heat soak aside, the other disadvantage to a front mount is lots of added intake tract voume. As much as proponents of frontmounts like to deny it, front mounts are laggier than top mounts. Remember, the definition of 'lag' is the extra time it takes to go from off-boost/partial throttle to full boost/full throttle. Since I use my car for tracking and not the strip, I will use top mounts. If I was primarily a drag racer, I would use a front mount.

Maybe it's the heat,

but I'm in Hawaii and the difference in the way my car pulls up top is night and day. So much stronger. After a few days, between my AVC-R and stock ECU, I noticed very little difference in lag. I'm on the stock turbo until I get engine management and then a p-n-p VF34 is going on. I'm not recommending you get a FMIC, but I honestly think they make more sense. Apparently so do Mitsubishi and Dodge among others.
