There's no harm in keeping it nice and shiny.

everytime i wash my car, i just wipe off the engine bay with a damp cloth..that way, no dirt/dust accumulates...and its always clean, at least for the top part of the engine, i try to reach into the hard spots as much as i can

i may do a yearly engine wash, might have to ask a dealer to do it though

I give me engine a good hose down every once in a while, help keeps most of the dirt build-up away

Or you could always pay someone who knows what they're doing to clean it for ya.

pop the hood, spray everything down with simplegreen, close the hood and wash the car normally and at the end spray off all the simple green.

If you want to get really crazy then buya few cans of regular generic shaving cream and go crazy with it. then rinse it all off.

No need to. Your engine compartment is designed with "water resistance" in mind. Just use some common sense and don't use a heavy spray in critical areas. There's no harm in "hosing down" your engine bay. If you have stubborn dirt/grease build up, use some Simple Green or mild detergent (with a sponge and/or soft brush if necessary).
