aps tmic broke a/c
hi,
I have the APS top-mount intercooler and the back of it pushed against the air conditioning pipes that run along the engine compartment firewall and eventually melted a hole in one of the pipes. I unfortunately did not notice it until the damage was done, has anyone else had this problem? How can I prevent this? This intercooler seems to be seated correctly so I don't know how this sort of problem could have escaped APS.
Also I was forced to run the i/c w/ sti scoop for 2 months without a splitter because APS was out of stock for that period of time. The direct heat from the i/c warped the plastic scoop & now there are 3 large deformities on it. When I finally received my splitter, it was slightly bent and the holes did not line up. The splitter & scoop feel very cheap. If anyone is looking at APS intercoolers, I would suggest paying a bit more for something else, perhaps turboxs or vishnu. Thats what i wish i did.

whats wrong with the aps tmic? i was thinking about getting one.. i hear they make the biggest one that will fit under your hood. Well about your a/c lines... i would wrap them with some kind of heat resistant wrap or try to bent them back more if possible. the tmic gets that hot? maybe you should invest in a water spray kit. also does the intercooler come with a y connector? and how much you pay for it?
No matter what intercooler you would have gone with, almost all require you to bend the AC lines a tad and/or put in a piece of rubber to prevent what happened to you.
In a normal world, when you fit something and there is a close tolerance to another piece, you either adjust it, or you move it.

I bought my APS with the metal Y duct, i think i paid right around $1100 for everything (ic, splitter, scoop) plus another $100 or so to get it painted. I got it from massimoperformance.com, but this was a long time ago and I am not sure what their prices are now, and if they even sell the package anymore.
Is there a special material that I should use to prevent the melting in the future? Or any kind of tape or rubber meant to hold up to 200 degrees or so will work? Thanks.

Yes, the A/C rubbed against the TMIC and over time a hole developed. You can prevent this by cutting a small piece of hose open and wrapping it around the A/C line as insulation.
You should be able to run a TMIC without a splitter if need be. I don't see how it could cause deformities in the scoop. The TMIC should not be getting that hot, unless you ahve some serious problems. Think of it this way, if it was hot enough to melt your scoop, then a whole lot of people would be having problems with stock/STi rubber seals melting to their TMIC's (some larger IC's use the STi seals).
