Noob M3 owner here, planning on picking up an 06-07 STI

Hi guys, im new here. Thinking about picking up a 06-07 sti. I look forward to learning and seeing your subies. I own an e46 m3 right now and before the m3 I owned a evo 8 mr. So im not new to performance cars. But I have a question. Is there any difference between the 06 or 07 sti?

Thanks Jason

Heres some pics of my m3 project car.

Welcome Jason to the forum. There are actually differences between the two years. There aren't that many, but the couple of things i can think of is the turbo and gears. I believe the 06 had a vf39 turbo, and the 07 came with a vf43. The gears are longer in the 07 compared to the 06. Oh and the 07 came a little lean from the factory so the tune was a little messed up, but an AP would fix that in seconds. Hope that helps somewhat. IMO though the 07 is probably the best year... Besides the 05 which is by far the SEXIEST

get a 06 sti, it saves you some money and you also don't get the crappy factory tunes.

06 is by far the best year as far as the factory ECU. The ECU was tuned proper and had no issues like 04, and esp 07. I know because I owned an 04 also, and had to do nothing to "fix" my new STi. I modded it because I wanted to, not because it came with a crappy tune from the factory. The 07's also have terrible looking (imo) chrome tail lights, whereas the 06's were painted a silver color. (I still personally change them to 05 tails, but thats just pref). The 07's only got SWP, so if you like white, 06 has the AW flat white paint, not the pearl. There was one more thing about 07's that is different, (other than the previous posters mentioning the longer gears), but it's escaping me. In any case, they're both subaru, both sti's, and both can be modified the same. Other than the gearing, it's mostly cosmetic differences, and like was mentioned previously, the ECU can be fixed with an AP, or better yet, a stand-alone EMS.

Thanks for the info. I do love the 05s, but two of my buddys have them. I use to dislike how the 06-07 stis looked, but recently fell in love with it. My plans is only to do cobb down pipe, hks exhaust, cobb access port, and tein coilovers and wheels.

I have one more question. I saw this picture on the m3forum of this sti. Does anyone know where I can find out the specs on it. Or atleast know what wheels those are?

I believe those wheels are volk Te37's.

And if you want to take ur STI out to the quarter mile, supposedly the 07's gearing ratio makes it better than the 06's. I think it requires one less shift

I have always loved the E46 M3 and yours is a fine example of why its awesome. Yea and those wheels are deffinately Volk TE37's, rota just came out with a TE37 low offset version that looks pretty damn awesome, but it looks like you don't go the cheap route, lol. Here's a pic

That is the Cusco Tomei Time Attack STi driven by Tarzan Yamada. Fastest time attack subie in the US at the moment, I believe. Yes I'd imagine with that Voltex kit he can run 18x10 or 18x10.5 Volk TE37's with probably a +22 offset.

P.S. As far as best handling goes, I'd talk with Myles at RCE about suspension, and forum member teh_clap for your wheel specific questions. IMO the simplest wheel sizes for an 06 are an 18x8.5 or even an 18x9, but all depending on offset. You can street an 18x9.5 like I am going to be, but unless you go with a widebody, the stock fenders require modification and you will run more camber than you'd like for a daily driver. Anything over -1.5 and you'll REALLLLLY start to notice the pronounced tire wear. There are guys running 18x10 wheels, but the problem is that they "poke" a lot with stock body, hence the reason for moving to a widebody kit, but that's hardly meant for daily driving (though it can ).
