Why are my tires wearing like this!?

I have never had a car wear tires like my '02 WRX. The car isn't too low (see pic. bad shot that I had to crop, sorry) but it wears the inside shoulder of the front tires like mad (see pic). I drive the car a bit hard but I'm not abusive, I rotate pretty often, and I started with a good alignement job at reputible shop. These tires are pretty soft but the wear is so uneven that I'm having trouble getting 8-10k miles out of them. Any suggestions?

Did you get it aligned after the lowering?

Rotating won't stop insides from wearing unevenly, unless you are remounting the tires at the same time to get the inside of the tire on the outside of the rim.

I don't remember how much camber adjustment is available from the factory, but my guess is that it's probably not enough. Do you have a printout from your last alignment job that shows you how your angles look compred to the specs Subaru published? Did you simply lower it, or did you also install some sort of "camber kit"?

Yes I did get the alignement done since the lowering!! A few times.

The rears don't wear the insides like the fronts so rotating shares the wear between the two tires on each side. I have not resorted to flipping the tires on the wheels...yet.

I'm running the Hotchkis front strut brace with camber plates. I have about 1.75 degrees neg. camber. I am also running Hotchkis sway bars and H&R coil-overs.

Unfortunately I can't find my old print out. I used to do a lot of autocrossing so I am familiar with alignement settings and nothing seemed out of whack with any of the jobs I have had done. This is the third set of tires (and alignement jobs) that have worn like this.

I think I found your problem. Take about one degree of negative camber out of it and that should pretty much solve your tire wear issues.

I'll try it but I have never had a car that camber caused just the inner 2 inches of the tread to wear this rapidly. I have run other cars with way more neg camber and the tires wore on the inside but over a wider part of the tread. None of these cars have been AWD, they have been RWD or FWD.

Anyone have any suggestions on toe settings??

"0" Toe and less camber will (should) solve your issues!

Even that kind of static camber isn't going to cause that kind of wear without excessive toe. I'm pretty sure your toe is the culprit; I've run decent amounts of camber even on my commuter and my 'kook's look great after almost 15000 miles, even all the way across. I think I'm closer to 1.5 degrees, but still in your same neighborhood.

I may very well stand corrected. Next time I'll go to the shop manual before I try to conjure up a specification from memory.

+

That's OK, my wife always accuses me of "conjuring" things from another body part.

I am more suspect of the toe. I had a bit less than the manual suggested for better turn-in but it was still toed in.

Quoted For Truth.

Glad to see you are alive.
Can you please call the shop sometime for business related things.

I've had a somewhat same trouble on my STi.
Since I live in Cool, you & I get to drive the same type of roads.
Lots of twisties taken in an agressive manner wears out tires.
