Smile What oil weight do you guys use?

Just wondering what weights you guys use in the summer vs. winter. Even if we don't have real seasons. =P

There are probably other factors involved, but last summer the WRX didn't seem to like the hot weather and 5w30. I'm thinking about trying out 10w40.. Anyone feel the same? Or am I clueless to what I'm talking about?

Well what makes you say that? Can you give some more detail.

What happens to the wrx in the summer?
How many miles do you have on it?
How do you drive?
Any mods?
????

Did your car tell you it did not like the 5w30 or how did you come to this conclusion?

i ran 5w30 all the time in my car. no excessive oil consumption except for my Sacramento to Victoria BC and back jaunt in June of last year where i burned somewhere between a half to a full quart. I thought that was reasonable considering we put over 12 hours driving in very high temperatures on the car each way.

5W30. It's fine through winter and we don't get enough really hot days to justify changing IMO.

5w30, 10w30, and 10w40 are all fine in the summer in Sac. I'd use 5w30 or 10w30 in the winter though.

I noticed my boost was a little lower (12.9 from 14 with Cobb Stg1 CA) in summer than winter, and the motor was hesitating a bit around 5,000rpm (which is gone in cool weather). No knock, just hesitation. It was most aparant in 100+ degree temperatures. Nothing was changed in the car; same OEM filter, same 5w30 Castrol GTX year round. With only 12k miles, I haven't had to service anything yet.

I stopped hitting boost altogether on hot days, and went only occasionally on cooler nights. When the temperatures came down, the motor ran much better. I realize a motor will respond differently in 50degree vs. 100degree weather, but I've never experienced such a drastic change. So, I thought maybe trying a higher weight in the summer may help.

Sorry for the long story. I probably don't know enough on the topic to begin with.

Heat = slow WRX. Had nothing to do with your oil.
