I've been using mobil 1 5w-30, but i've decided to go 10w-30 since it is gets pretty hot here. What grades do you guys use?

Wondering if 10w-30 would be better for us since we see temps as high as 110 F here. I was looking at the oil ranges for different viscosities and it said that 5w-30 should be used below 104 F. Any thoughts?

10w-30 is okay in your motor (I believe). Just don't use it in the winter if you plan on going to the snow.

I normally use Mobil 1 5w-30 all year round but have occasionally switched to slightly higher viscosity for hotter-than-normal (for Sac) summers. You might try Mobil 1 5w-40 to maintain cold-start performance but still protect well at higher temperatures.

I don't know how hard it would be to find this grade of Mobil 1, though - I don't think they carry this viscosity at my local Costco.

A better solution might be the installation of a small, aircraft-grade oil cooler that you could block off for fall/winter use. I used to have an oil temp gauge installed and the in-pan temps would soar after a short burst of full-throttle on the highway in the summer time.

In case you're interested, I also use OEM Subaru oil filters purchased from SubaruParts.com in bulk quantities to save on shipping. These filters are manufactured by Purolator for Subaru but I don't feel that this guarantees identical construction to what you can find on the shelf at Pep Boys with the Purolator name on it.

I found out that mobil 1 truck & SUV formula is indeed 5w-40. I saw it at walmart the other day, maybe i'll go exchange my 10w-30 for some of that.

I used to live in Davis and ran 10w-30 in the summers. I don't live out there anymore but I still run 10w-30 in the summer.

When hot they're about the same as 30w, but 30w is WAY thicker when cold and not good for start-up or cold weather.
