I don't think it's a strictly female connotation, but I think it is more frequently used on for girls. When boys get kicked (punched by a dog, sperry) in the crotch they usually use other terms to explain it. Family jewels, junk, nuts, sack....etc.
There are more colorful words to explain the male genitals.
