Well there's your problem.

Daddy budget is forcing me to repair temporarily while I source another trans for a swap... Gotta have two cars running.. Stupid daily driver.. Wife was put off on bedrest early and could pop any day now..

Finally got around to pulling the trans.. 3rd is obviously fragged.. Second gear (driven only) has a nice little chip on one of the teeth.. Have a new 3/4 gearset.. Picking up a 2nd driven gear today.. Will start assembly tonight..

Thankfully everything else looks good.. No other nicks / scratches anywhere.. Going to completely strip the trans bare and clean everything..

Holy crap, did you try to drop-kick your shifter into 3rd gear? how in the hell do you destroy the entire gear that completely.

Easy. Just put a lot of torque through it

This is out of a car that has never been launched or shifted aggressively:

:P

It actually let go on an incredibly soft down-shift.. I was just lugging along in fourth and i dropped it to third.. I always rev-match my downshifts.. As soon as the clutch engaged the gear just stripped.. It was obviously just completely stressed to hell and ready to let go..

Picked up the remainder of what I needed from scoobaru yesterday.. New seals all around too.. So far I'm up to about $550 in parts.. Maita scoobaru keeps all this stuff in stock.. I guess they sell a lot of them.. HAH.. All told I will be spending less than 1/10th of what my finished trans will cost.. Good enough to get me around for a little while.. But I can't help but feel like I'm wasting a LOT of my time doing this..

I dug up all the parts to one of my old boost controllers and will be installing it as well.. I hate being stuck on one boost map all the time / cant really stand manual boost controllers.. It's a little ricey, but my old Profec E01 is going in so I can manage my boost a bit better (going to mount out of sight in the glovebox).. Ill keep it low most of the time..

The trans had about 46k miles on it since new and only had 4 drag passes on it ever... (Trapping in the 119's)

At this point I'll just be happy to get the damned car out of the garage.. Seems like its been parked forever..

What's the going rate on transmission work? I need to upgrade to the carbon balk rings and want to do the JDM 5|6 (or maybe the '07 1|2 3|4 tall set) . All of the "required" special tools for the 6MT are staring down at me like a bad *** **** saying "Don't even think about it".

if your wife did that, i can only imagine what mine looks like. She cost me a clutch @ 26k because she wanted to learn to drive MT... now im scared...

p.s. she only lets me pull the new forester out of the driveway to do yard work, maybe i should tell her i need to learn how to drive automatic...

But in all seriousness, Im sorry about the tranny man. Your car is so sick, hope to see it running soon.

Hahaha.. Paul has been saying "You're gunna be walking soon!" Ever since the car was on the dyno in his shop..

What's even more hilarious.. It actually blew up one day while I was driving past his shop.. I coasted to a stop in front of DB tuned and had a tow truck come out and pick me up there.. I suffered much ridicule / laughter that day too..

Paul is some kinda Subaru nostradamus...

Eh.. This 5mt is pretty much disposable at this point.. So I'm doing this Oklahoma style (Special tools include a penny wedged in the gears - Penny is soft - will deform and mangle / wont damage the gears..). If I were building a trans for the long term I'd definitely spring for the special tools..

You might just want to consider the cost of the special tools and weigh it against what a good shop would charge to actually do the work.. You might save a lot of headache just paying for it to be done.. Air tools are a must too..
