**update on the wifey's crashed HD**
Hallelujah!!!!
success!!!!
at home recovery FTW!!!!
$7.95 for an external 2.5 HD enclosure and SCORE!
all the files are intact and accessable!!!!
I am backing them all up right now!
wooohoooo!
wifey will be well pleased!
anyone know if it would be safe to just reformat this drive and reuse this original HD or is that risky since it tanked on an error 7 in the boot sector originally?

i'll prolly just reformat it and give it to her as a backup USB drive to save all her files to.
for that matter, i might try to see if Toshiba will warranty it and send me a new/referb'd one.
that way there is nothing to worry about.
but the end result is, we have ALL her files!
the guy we took it to to diagnose it, told her she might as well kiss all her files goodbye cos they'd never be recoverable unless we went w/ the $900-$5000 recovery places.
$7.95 > $900-$5,000

he said we'd never get to the files cus the HD wouldn't be able to tell anything it "was" a harddrive because of the error.
but i plugged it into the external enclosure, plugged in the USB cable and, halleluja! it opened like an standard USB drive would. folders popped up and everything was there.
time for a banandance!
