Trip to Reno in snow

Has anybody taken their Subaru to Reno or Tahoe in relatively light snow on the stock RE92s without chains?
Thanks.

I plan on driving up here all winter on them.

Just don't drive like a jackass, and you should be fine.

Done it, got the t-shirt. You'll be fine, drive like you've got an egg on the gas and brake pedals and you'll be good.

Like everyone said, go slow and drive smart. Long braking zones are your friend

The chains are for cornering prowess.

Thanks.

I have never seen a subaru with chains! That's almost as funny as the mustang!

The fact the the car is a 4wheel drive does not mean a whole lot in snow about a 6 inches deep. Your traction depends on the tires. My question was regarding the tires. I was wondering if the RE92s are good enough "all-season" tire to manage some snow freeway driving.

Thanks for all of you responses.

California will actually shut down the roads before they require awd cars to have chains. So, whoever had them on was most likely just being cautious. Speaking as someone who has lived in very snowy regions (just like doublerx), it is incredibly rare to see a subaru on the road with chains.

That said, the RE92s are fine. Personally, I believe that survival in snow driving lies more in driver education then tire selection. If you know what your limitations are, you should be fine. I've driven in snow storms with Kuhmo MX's and 712's (both times during freak snowstorms early in the season) and not once did I lose traction.

i agree...it's all in who's behind the wheel....
i used to drive my jetta and my civic with low profile winter tires in the snow every year...
i never had a problem...i even made it half way up carson road taking the backroads to avoid the highway closure on 50 in my lowered civic. i was trying to get home to pollock pines from placerville in a huge snowstorm...the only reason i had to stop was the front bumper was acting like a snowplow cus it was so low and eventually when the snow got over the front bumper to the height of the hood i couldn't push it anymore and was forced to turn around and call for a ride home from my pops in his truck...
i have NEVER chained up in any vehicle i have been driving...

slow and steady will get you just about anywhere in the snow as long as it doesn't get too deep.

now ice is another story...once they plow and you get that hard packed ice/snow i get really cautious on where i drive...you have no control unless you run a studded tire.

I was told (by a fellow subie owner) that its the law to have chains in your car when you're driving up there in the snow....so he says he has some that don't even fit. is he completely wrong?
