The common misconception of "Schrodinger's Cat" is that Schrodinger posed it to support the Copenhagen Interpretation when really it was to mock it. While the Copenhagen Interpretation holds water for subatomic particles and the simultaneous superposition of multiple quantum states, a cat, most decidedly, is a much larger system and cannot be treated as a particle. I don't think Schrodinger's gedanken experiment, vis-a-vis the cat in the box, is as monumental in Quantum Mechanics as popular culture has heralded it to be. I place it in the same category, with regard to popularity, as icanhascheezburger in that it has cats.

You want to get into the real voodoo of QM, read up on quantum entanglement. To quote my instructor for that lecture, "It's really ****ing weird."
In the refreshing reading I was doing most physicists acknowledge he was attempting to ridicule superposition but in in fact made it accessible to the average person. One person was trying to assign 50/50 odds to the cat surviving.

Don't all statistics boil down to 50/50?

No.

But every outcome has a non-zero probability, and the sum of all probabilities is 1.

Now the guy who said there's 50/50 odds of survival said the randomness of radioactive decay has nothing to do with the thought experiment... Isn't that the entire point of the thought experiment...
