Arguing over the interweb isn't nearly as fun, because you can't watch people get flustered because they can't explain why they're doing what they're doing, but it's obviously the right thing to do.

I need a beer.

IT question, on a local Windows network, how can I find the hostname of a PC if I only know the IP address? nslookup doesn't work on our network (unless I'm using it incorrectly).

um, well, I think it would be difficult. Unless it's an old *** version of Windows, finger is likely turned off. I'm not sure.

Get better DHCP servers?

Is there really anything better than a Microsoft DHCP server?!?

Is there a way to do it from the 2003 domain server?

I dunno. I don't know much about networking and I don't know much about windows domain servers. they = the suck.

Just boot the system off the network and wait to see who complains, then ask them the hostname. problem solved.

The reason I'm asking is because we've been getting crazy network traffic for the past week or so, I ran an Ethereal port scan and it shows certain PCs broadcasting packets to port 2989. Any clues on what this might be?

Try

nbtstat -A {ip address}

The port in question is sometimes used by the RAT trojan which spreads via UDP thus the broadcasting.

Good luck

is it one of those..."get your degree in anything!" ones that you just pay the fee and pick a "major" then write a 300 word essay stating you know everything and only need the paper to verify the fact and then they mail you a "degree" in your chosen field in 10-12 business days?
