That's where i got my motorcycle licensing from... its a whole weekend with 1 day in classroom. Im not sure how much it will cost but i know its a bit more if you are older than 21. Not sure why. Really fun class though. hope that helps

what i did was go to the riding courses and if you pass that then you just take that certificate to dmv and take the writing test and if you pass that, then you will get your license. that is one of two options.
the other option is, you can go to dmv and do their test course and writing test. if you pass that, you will get your license as well.
in my opinion, taking the class was easier.
hope that helps.

Usually called BARF. It's like the I-club of motorcycles. Read up.

Thanks you guys! I was thinking about getting a 1300cc as my first bike... I think the name was Hayabusa? Anyways, I found a place in sacramento that does it for $250 bucks for 21 and older. It is a 3 day course which 2 days is on the weekend. I might/might not do it, depending on the insurance quotes I get. Progressive wants $220 bucks a month! My 06 wrx is barley over 100 bucks a month from nationwide!
If you go to the DMV and take the written permit test you can ride during the day time. Then take the course from MSF and take the certificate they give you to the DMV and they will just give you your license. Or if you know any instructor like I did, I just paid him like 75 bucks for just the certificate and took it to the DMV after that. If you get your permit before going to the class just make sure you take the class before your permit expires in a year, or they will make you take the written test again. Also I had to take the normal driving written test the same time as the written permit test for motorcycles. Not sure if that is the same everywhere. A hayabusa is a pretty big bike for a first bike... I would either go with a 600 or 750 gsxr...

I'd start with a 250 (lotsa good used ones for a few months) get to know your bad habits, then about 3-4 months in, grab a 600cc or 650. If you jump into the 1k+ as your FIRST bike the odds of you getting hurt or even killing yourself are a lot higher and I will guarantee you'll make a mistake and wreck the bike either way. It's ok to start slow, this isn't like a car, it doesn't have airbags. A 'Busa is like giving a 16 year old his first car that is a stickshift 1500hp, he'd probably wreck not knowing how the clutch felt.
If you aren't going to do the MSF (which I highly suggest you do, they give you the bike to practice on and instructions for a day or two, even on the weekends.) and going to do the DMV test, you better take a small bike, cuz it's easier to do the figure 8's and go around in a small tight circle than a bigger bike.

Have you rode a bike before? I guarantee if you get a Hayabusa as your first bike you're going to hurt yourself and wreck the bike anyways. If you've been riding for a while on a 600, then maybe i'd give you some credit. But from a standpoint of being on BARF for a while, you're just going to get flamed for being a total idiot.

I personally think that if you jump on a Busa, you will be famous... 10 o'clock news cast about another person being shoveled off i80

Is this a joke? A 'Busa is the worst possible bike you could get for starting out. Get a 250 or 500. If you have to have something bigger, get an SV-650 or a Ninja 650R, and even those might be too much. I rode my first bike to 3.5 years before upgrading. My current bike is 1050cc and I barely use all the power it has.
Anyways, take the MSF, get your license, and start with something reasonable. Even a "slow" bike will be as fast as most performance cars on the road.

anyone know where the good deals on a used 250-500 would be? I'm checking craigslist and the local dealers periodically, but if anyone knows of great places I'm all ears.
