My wife's laptop is all FUBAR. the screen has been extremely tempermental lately and would only work when opened to certain angles.
my on-line searching has shown that it's most likely the lcd ribbon cable, but i have no idea where to find one. i'd prefer to find one locally, but will mail order if that's the only way to go.
the laptop is a Compaq Presario V2570NR

Only local place would be the sketchy laptop repair place on Sunrise in Gold River, but they'll want to fix it, not sell you parts.
I'd just stick to Ebay, but have fun - Compaq/HP's aren't made to be serviceable unless they're business-class machines (and even then it's sketchy). The ribbon cables can be a PITA to replace. It also might be the screen position switch; the LCD is always on but the backlight only comes on when it's open. Sometimes they're integrated with the ribbon cable or hinge assembly, sometimes not.

well, i took the back off the screen. fiddling around with the cable would temporarily bring the screen up, but it would go back off again.
i think there's a connection problem in the cable. i took your advice and found one on e-bay. there's a connector on each end, so I think it shouldn't be super hard to change.

well, got my replacement cable in today, her laptop is all fixed up and screen works great now.
it was actually disturbingly easy to get the screen apart and replace the cable.
Thanks for the tip sybir.
