Some guy doing $70 tuning in Chico. Scam?
02-07 WRX/STI/FXT Tune
Does this seem legit? I've never heard of a reliable $70 tune. Anyone know of that shop he's referring to? Sounds and looks like an ad to me.

I FOUND IT ON THE INTERNET, MUST BE LEGIT.
Only take your car to people you trust with your $6,000 motor. If you trust some dude offering it for $70 on CL, more power to you.

$70 for a tune??? What could possibly go wrong?!?!?!

I see a blown motor in the future whoever goes to this guy! Tuning is one of the most important aspects of making a car run correctly and not blowing up! There is a reason that a really good tuner or the average good tuner costs 300+ for a basic tune compared to a $70.00 tune.

I believe the owner possibly bought some parts off me from craigslist, he said he was opening a Subaru shop in Chico. Not sure the name but WRC sounds familiar. No idea on the quality of work he has done, I would get references for his prior work/tunes though.

maybe he is just trying to build up a customer base so is doing tunes for cheap. I know i got my fenders rolled by some guy for ten bucks because he was trying to get better at it before offering his services to everyone. just saying its a possibility

he could be getting the map from some forum (theres at least one out there) and flashing it and then datalogging to see if there is knock. Thats what got done to my car, its free and you can look at the datalogging closely to see if there is any problems.
I just sent him an email, trynna see wassup

Here's the few emails we exchanged. I don't plan on doing it, I was just getting info for the sake of people that wanted to try it. I've got my tune already..
Bruce#2: "No, when I first started tuning my own car, I did that. but as time went by, I do things a lot better than I used too. I usually start by pulling the map off the car then start from scratch, but I have done it so many times, I have all these base maps for different cars that I created, and i work it from there instead. It saves time and makes the $70 well worth it. I have a base map for every wrx and sti from 02-07. I have a couple of FXTs and 1 LGT."
Me#2: "Do you pull the map off the car and tune it or do you go the easy way out and get the map off a forum, flash it to the ecu and edit it after the logs?"
Bruce#1: "Yes my choise of tools are Romraider, ecu flash, and a tarix cable. Jumpers if i need them. Its all you need really. If you have any questions let me know."
Me#1: "So what exactly are you doing when you tune someones Subaru. What programs, tatrix cable, logging, etc..? Just wonder, I'm not a dummy.
Thanks,
Eli"
And yes, he spelled choice with an "S"
Anyone know why you would you need jumpers?

well, even though i want to judge the dude a ree-ree, we can't simply jump to conclusions without actually seeing his maps.
everyone who considers themselves a "tuner", has had a start somehow; whether in a classroom or just by tinkering. the important part is how well he/she understands the whole tuning picture. but, just as important is community involvement.
for example, if i started posting around that i can do tunes for cheap, i'd probably get flamed; no-one here really knows who i am and how good my tuning is. same goes for this guy, but he's arrogant enough to try to make money with it...by posting on craigslist instead of forums.
AP for newbs? yeah ok that right there does show ignorance.. (street tuner for newbs? don't think so)
most likely open source tune with his own tactrix cable. hope they aren't just "basemaps" from the romraider/osecu forums.
personally i would never ever send someone to a craigslist tuner. just my 2c
