I create my own artisan homemade gas. Its way better that way.

/I switch between Chevron and Shell based on which side of the street I'm on when I need gas.

I have 3 years of data that shows Shell fill-ups yield me more MPGs than Chevron. Cars are different, YMMV.

Costco buys gas from Tesoro Refinery in Martinez. Tesoro also owns a lot of Shell stations in the greater bay area since they bought a shell refinery in SoCal area. I'm sure some people noticed local U.S.A. stations re-branded to Shell stations, since Tesoro owned many U.S.A. stations they wanted to charge more for the same product since people will "buy a name brand" over the "cheap guys". So what I'm saying is Costco and many Shell stations are Selling the same gas, though Shell has their Nitrogen additive, but still pretty much same gas.

I work at Tesoro making gasoline, for reference.

This is true except I believe Costco adds a little more ethanol to their gas. I add Lucas fuel treatment every oil change anyway.

That's interesting info, thanks for sharing.
Another semi-fun fact: after documenting my fillups for a while now, I realized that the "out of pocket" between pump 91 and e85 is exactly the same for me, despite the drastic difference in gas mileage. Meaning I'm having 50whp more fun at no extra cost.

e85 FTW

e85 FTW
+1 for e85 fun

controlling the right foot however makes 91 an obsolete fuel IMO, compared to e85. yes, in open loop the guzzling begins, but with nice smooth throttle control the mpg isn't a deal-breaker at all.
plus the stinky exhaust is almost gone and i like to get a whiff of alcohol combustion; reminds me of burning vodka .. i like

i liked both, shell and chevron 91.. LTFT were quite consistent with both

Its literally all the same, the only difference is the additives (techron, nitrogen enriched bs, etc) as the trucks fill up at the local refinery if it is a Shell destined truck it will get the shell treatment, if its headed somewhere else it doesn't simple as that. The only real variable to getting different quality gasolines is the handling downstream at the stations (tanks, pumps, etc).

And here is another fact you might not know, that say you go to a 76 station you might be buying Chevron or Shell refined fuel. If you go to a Shell station you could be pumping Chevron refined fuel depending and where you are in relation to the refiner. They all wheel and deal fuels to save costs on transportation. Same goes with the crudes. The only difference is the additives. I work for Shell so Shell is the best so go buy NOW!
