I have a quarter-million miles on my 97.
Headgaskets go, so make sure they've been done or he's gonna have to pay for it. Service intervals just like any other Scoob, 105k timing belt, etc.

Other than that, I can count on one hand how many times I've had anything more than routine maintenance take the car out for more than a few hours.

So would you recommend anything newer than a 97 (or is that the first year they were made)? How much does it cost to get the head gaskets done?

Just make sure he doesn't drive much in December, that seems to be the only time you lose an HG in those.
