Keith, dust shields surround the pistons to keep crap from getting in there and wearing the pistons/sleeves and causing wear, fluid leaking, sticking, etc. Race calipers don't have them becuase rubber can burn off at high temperatures (like where brakes catch on fire) and becuase they're rebuilt constantly. Not something you normally want to deal with on a street car.
