will an aftermarket exhaust really cause you to fail the visual inspection?

Good call, ask a shop to confirm that it bypasses CARB/EPA requirements on a public forum. You know one instance is enough to shut them down as a smog tester, right?

This is one of those situations where if you don't already know what you need to know, this isn't where to find out. Sorry :|

LOL +1

seriously...either theyll get shut down if they have enough incidents or get a major fine...its what...5k a violation or something? most smog shops arent going to risk the potential huge penality just to get $500 out of u instead of the normal $70 to smog...probably best bet is to ask some ricer kids in ur area lol

Yes, a legacy central member who lives in Antelope just failed a couple days ago because of an aftermarket downpipe on his legacy turbo. And that was the local Roseville smog place too.

If the mods are legal, you can go to any place you want and should have no problems with the check. If the mods are not legal then, yes you are asking for something illegal. Nobody in their right mind would out a "mod friendly" smog shop on a message forum.

specifically what kind of exhaust do you have? if it's just a cat-back, you'll be fine. if it's a turboback, you're going to have to swap it.

^^ that's what i thought, because i've always read that anything after the catalytic converter does not affect emissions, and so is not considered when doing a CARB check. exhausts can still be cited for being too loud, but not for emissions violations. someone correct me if i'm wrong about that, cause i have a custom cat-back, and i've been wondering about this.

Catbacks are fine, I dont think they even fail you for volume level. My car had a custom catback when it got its BAR certificate...

well the smog checker won't fail you for having a loud exhaust, but i've read that honda guys with B swaps sometimes have problems with the state refs because their exhausts get too loud. not to mention the classic cop stop for "modified exhaust".

you will pass just fine if you only have a custom cat back.

Well it probably was too loud. There is a db limit for exhausts.

Well... I know of a place where I've taken my modified cars for years. They even passed my '92 Mustang with a 331 stroker, ridiculous custom cam, and full exhaust (including Bassani catted X-pipe)...

BUT...

I'm not telling...
