I think we are looking at it all wrong, i think the purpose of them is to make it so no one has any idea what the hell car they are driving... because 90% of those I have no idea what they are

Well, you wouldn't be able to identify old Cedrics, Glorias, Chasers, Soarers, etc etc etc, anyways.
It's an evolution from the bosozoku (biker gangs) who do up the cars (that's why so many have the tops chopped off) in a similar outlandish style as their bikes (think old Kamen Rider).
Some of them have a definite silhouette-racer feel about them, but it's more like an art car than anything else. They're built as showpieces (just like show cars here), but they're actually driven around.......
They're ridiculous, but I'd kill for the cars that are underneath some of those bodykits.......and the rimmmsssssssss
