Pioneer/Audiovox to provide in-dash iPod interfaces
Yes! I won't have to buy a new Alpine deck for a good mobile iPod interface. I wonder if Pioneer's will be better or have the same limitations of Alpine's interface. Pioneer's interface plugs into their propietery I-Bus (changer controls + more) for $140
Audiovox, on the other hand, looks like it will be compatible with any head unit that has changer controls. You will need a head-unit specific wire, available from a 1-800 number, after you buy the control unit. Priced at $200 (don't know if that includes the extra cable or not).

Pioneer today introduced a new iPod Adapter for its car stereos. The direct-connect adapter works with the IP-Bus system in more than 3 million Pioneer car stereos, including all of Pioneer's new car stereos, which are being introduced at this week's International CES show. Through Pioneer's IP-Bus system, the CD-IB100 is backwards compatible with more than 3 million Pioneer car stereos. The company says that users will "be able to operate their iPods as easily as they would using the stereo unit, by means of the stereo's front panel controls." Pioneer stereos will display up to eight characters of text including album, artist and song names, with the ability to scroll additional information. While an iPod is docked to the CD-IB100, the adapter will charge the internal battery.
With select 2005 Pioneer audio video units, the adapter also provides enhanced features including multi-line display and list search, taking advantage of the additional display real estate. The CD-IB100 adapter also takes full advantage of Pioneer's audio enhancement capabilities such as Easy Equalizer (EEQ) and Bit Media Expander (BMX). Pioneer radios with the built-in EEQ feature let users adjust the sound from their iPod/iTunes device to their audio preference. Units with the BMX feature automatically restore the harmonics lost during recording of compressed music as well. The CD-IB100 adapter will be available in March of 2005 for $140.

Audiovox has announced a new iPod car adapter that allows iPod users to play songs through any car stereo system. The Audiovox iPod Mobile Interface Kit allows for a direct connection of the iPod to most factory radios for playback through the cars audio system. In addition, it allows the radio controls to operate the iPod and also enables users to control the iPod using the steering wheel controls. The system will also charge the internal battery of the iPod, according to the company. The kit is easy to install with a plug-in connection to the CD Changer port. The company says the iPod screen will display all the Song/Artist data, and browse, as if it were not connected. The module will be available later this month for $200 and customers will be required to call a toll-free 800 number to obtain the appropriate cable for their car stereo (which the company will deliver within 24-48 hours).

I've been waiting for the 05 Alpine units to come out. I heard that the 04 with the ipod interface had issues with speed in loading.
Supposedly these things were fixed with the newer units.
Nick, are you not an Alpine fan or do you already have a Pioneer?
I've put off upgrading my stereo until I can get something that runs my ipod properly, all 33 megs!

No, I like Alpine, quite a bit actually. I already have a Pioneer that suits me just fine, so dropping $140 is preferable to $300+ depending on how nice of an Alpine deck I want.
i just went though this whole thing with my new sti, i waited and waited for the alpine stuff cause i have sirius satellite radio and i have an ipod, and the alpine kc420 ipod interface has not been advalible as of xmas time and the sirius tuner just came avalible b4 that, i got tired of waiting and i thought that i wouldnt like the ipod controls on the alpine deck because lets face it alpine has a good product but crappy interfaces on there controls. so i was in fry's the day after xmas and saw the clarion deck i was looking at, the touch screen one,was on sale for $299. so i bought that because i liked the deck and it has an RCA aux input , so i bought the belkin monstercable and had them run it right next to my LH seat. unfortuatly at the time i didnt realize that the clarion deck was 4 channeland i had to ditch the subaru under seat sub but with the extra power from the deck i cant tell too much diff.
i knew i should have installed everything my self but they had an opening right then and the DIN kit and i didnt want to **** up my new car if they broke something its on them. but NEVER HAVE ANYTHING INTALLED BY FRY'S NEVER NEVER. my sirus tuner was hooked up and just tossed under the LH kick board carpet and the antenna was ran up the a-pilliar to the fender and around the windshield molding to the roof where he put it on where he thought was the center and it wasnt looked like crap. so i ended up redoing everything my self n e ways. oh ya and for ipod charging im intalling a 12v recp. under the seat stealing the subwoofer power.
