Hey, guys. I'm here :|

School was fun this morning. Class @ 7:30. Leave @ 8 (heheh). Go to book store, spend $360. Leave book store (now sporting about 30lbs worth of books), walking funny due to book store *** raping, go to Math dept. and ask about possible placement test I need to stay in my Business Math course, taught by a hippy, 60s rocker looking ****ing GENIUS who scares the hell out of me (because this class will likely be difficult). Find out I don't have to take the test because I've already taken STATS1 (awww yeah!). Head to work, gaslight is on. That sucks. Get gas, coffee (more gas), and some gum (cherry flavor!). Head to work.

Now I'm here. My kernel panic problems appear to be temporarily solved (problem isn't happening anymore due to vm changes we made but I still gotta upgrade the kernel at some point) and I don't have class tonight.

Today started off a bit rough, but it's quickly changing for the better.

That sounds lovely....One question...What is a Kernal Panic problem?

Oh, yeah, my Business Math professor, who is ultra smart (P.H.D in EE and CS, Masters in Physics and Mathematics), worked at the The Berkley RadLab, developed a robot sonar based navigation system and is involved in the arts (oh yeah, he wears a lightning bolt around his neck and purple glasses), is also involved heavily in the arts.

This is actually pretty cool. He did this exhibit at the Pierogi art gallery in NY, 2000:

A Kernel Panic is a type of error that takes place when the main part of the operating system, known as the kernel, receives an instruction that it does not understand or cannot handle, the way it expects to. Kernel Panic can also happen when the operating system fails to recover from another error. Less common, is a Kernel Panic resulting from damaged or incompatible software. Defective or incompatible hardware can also cause a Kernel Panic, but even less likely than software.
I have two different occurences of buggy software on two different sets of servers causing kernel panics for me right now. One is temporarily bandaged (the above)

Upgrading the Kernal is always fun.

How many machines need the upgrade?

So, it's not harware related, Memory or HD?

yeah, the price of those books are crazy, I remember spending about $90 on a single used math book that was beat to hell, new ones were around $150 then I was lucky to be able to sell it back for $30

In UNIX, a panic is an unrecoverable system error detected by the kernel 1 as opposed to similar errors detected by user space code. It is possible for kernel code to indicate such a condition by calling the panic function located in the header file sys/systm.h. However, most panics are the result of unhandled processor exceptions in kernel code, such as references to invalid memory addresses. These are typically indicative of a bug somewhere in the call chain leading up to the panic.

No screwed is having to take 2+ years of math courses like linear algebra, differential equations, and some others I thankfully forgot the names of. They really came in handy for the fun engineering classes like thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, vehicle stability, etc. though. Being back here at UCD makes me reminisce.

Well, the first issue I'm having is with RedHat AS2.1. There's a bug in their 2.4.9-e.x kernel that causes an issue with this process called kswap. If you hammer the system enough that it starts using a fair amount of the allowable swap, it can cause the kswapd process to start freaking out, it sucks up all the CPU and memory, and will either cause a complete hang condition or a kernel panic.

The other actually may be hardware, but it also may be an issue where the driver for the hardware isn't compatible with the software we're running on the box. Super!

I thought I had heard that term before, that's why I asked, we use a UNIX system here and I've heard my IT guy talking about it.

That's why I'm majoring in business. I don't do math. I believe this will be about the end of my math needs for G.E and my degree

I'm not sure what the latest kernel revision is, but I believe the latest kernel for RHEL 3.0 is 2.6.x.
