He was a member of the German Army (deserted) and was a member of the Hitler Youth as a child (but dropped out early on). What bothers me more is that he seems to be a hardline conservative Catholic which seems to be a departure from John Paul II's more accepting policies. Aparently, it seems he chose the name Benedict XVI because Benedict XV was more moderate (like JPII) and is hoping to seem more moderate.

I wonder how this will turn out.

If he was in Hitler youth, that would seem about right. Still seems weird that anyone that ever had to salute Adolph Hitler would be elected Pope.
