I never really understood the network briging either, all I know is that it caused problems on my roommate's lappy until we unbridged the devices.

i am still failing at this.

tried a few tips from a few freinds, but i can't get into the prefs on the darn router to get me the info i need to setup the secured network.

the Belkin WAP model # is F5D6130.

i talked to a friend who recently bought 2 of these units on sale and said he has had trouble getting either to work right.
he says he hasn't been able to setup WEP at all.
he's no halfwit. he works for CalTrans managing all their wireless networks and email servers. so its more than likely not user error on his part.
its looking more and more like i might need a new router.

any tips to help this work on my stuff w/o upgrading the router?

Honestly, dude, just buy this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1051384663529

$70 - $30 mail in rebate = $40 and you'll avoid all the frustration from this Belkin thing that probably won't work. I mean, you could call their tech support, but they probably won't help you, and if your buddy who does wireless networking for a living can't make these work either, you're probably hosed.

If you pick up the above router, it will do everything you need it to REALLY easily.

cool. thanks.
we have the WRT54GS here at work and its been great.

i just sux at the wireless network cus i've never done it before and i have a feeling its just stupid stuff that i'm not doing cus i'm new.
i have yet to have anyone come out in person.
all my attempts have been via "oh its simple, just do this..." type advise and i know i'm just missing it someplace.
i'm 95% sure if anyone w/ experience seting up a network could come to my house and have the thing setup in less than an hour.

i'll just invite someone over who knows the diff between spam and a wireless netwok, cus i sure can't figure it out.

i just need to get it up soon. the new neighbors just moved into the rental next door and they're jackin our signal. i just keep unpluggin the WAP when we're not online but it makes my wife pissed when she just wants to jump online and has to fish around for the power plug and wait for it to reset.

Just another +eleventy billion for the linksys. Headaches like you are going through are worth the cost of the Linksys to avoid. The linksys is not only a no brainer to set up, it performs really well and is so popular that anyone on here that does computer stuff can help you. I have a consulting client with a D-link wireless broadband router and the thing fights for control of everything and doesn't play nice with her DSL modem or wireless cards (non d-link).

Hmm, I haven't had trouble with my D-Link.

I did have a Linksys A/B/G router that sucked huge ****. It regularly would quit serving HTTP and would not even allow connections directly to it. I gave it back to the guy that I got it from.

We're currently running a Netgear at home with very minor troubles (which I think is more related to our cable modem power connection being loose).
