I'm not in any trouble with the boss. This is mostly trying to make things less uncomfortable in the department because she thinks I hate her and is blaming me for causing some massive self-confidence issue. She always fired right back though, and never said a thing about to me about her not being happy with being picked on or that I was making her think she was stupid.

The fun part today will be when I tell her I don't think she's stupid, but in fairness, I am frustrated with her. She started in the UNIX world the same way I did: Not knowing ****. The difference was, I looked for stuff to do, worked Saturday nights when I wasn't scheduled to, but because I wanted to learn, pulled extra oncall shifts so I'd get problems dumped on me. Even now, when I don't know stuff but want to learn it, I tell my boss to assign me to projects that are nightmares and that are going to massively challenge me. When the project is over, I'm much better at my job, a stronger tech person, and more valuable to my team. Her on the other hand, just sits there and waits for people to give her stuff to do, then when she runs in to problems just throws her hands up in the air and asks for help, as opposed to searching for the answer on google, or using the man pages, etc. The most classic example was when someone put tape on her IR mouse. She came back to her desk, the mouse didn't move, so she unplugged it and threw it in the trash . One of the other guys looked at it and was like "Ummmm, yeah."

OK, I've been there.

Two approaches:

1. Deny everything and make counter accusations.

or

2. As she's talking/venting/whining, start to tear up & sniffle a bit. They won't know what to do & most likely walk out, leaving you alone.
