in a nutshell, michelin's tires are suspect in a 2 crashes of toyota's during practice for the USGP. michelin is claiming that the tires are unsafe around the large sweeper that is part of the oval configuration. the FIA is not allowing michelin to supply their teams with newer spec tires without penalty.

i'm not sure how i feel about this... on one hand, it could be a safety issue if the michelin teams don't slow down in that turn, and doing so would most likely cause any car running those tires to run considerably slower lap times. on the other hand, ferrari has been handicapped for part of the season because their bridgestones suck until they heat up, and they can't heat up in a 1 lap qualifying session, and this is just a similar situation but on a much larger scale.

either way, it's going to be an interesting race.

ALLLLLL the more reason why i HATE the FIA...god pretty soon its going to turn into nascar with changing rules in the middle of the season.....but i dont see what the big deal is about changing tires in a race....but the FIA wants u to stick to ONE set for qualifying AND for the race...its sooooo f'in retarded, i cant STAND the FIA

either way, it's going to be an interesting race.[/

This thing is gayer than gay. 6 cars running around the track. It looks like practice. Can you imagine paying all that money to go to Indy and seeing this BS?

why should they? it's not the FIA's fault Michelin didn't know what the hell they were doing. that's not exactly fair to the Bridgestone teams. AND the FIA didn't stop the teams from racing, they all pulled out. the michelin teams are trying to blame it on everyone except Michelin.

im actually on michelin's side here...it was unsafe for the teams that were michelin tire sponsored to go out and i respect that and i would want my team to pull out too if there was an obvious issue like that...i mean c'mon take a look at ralf shcumacher's car and how bad it got F'd up! yes michelin should have persued into fixing their error...but that USGP just plain SUCKED...3 teams raced...while i AM and WILL be always a Ferrari fan i am happy they moved up, but wished that there were more teams on the track....the FIA should have put that chicane there to make the race a little more interesting and give the fans what they deserve...wouldnt u feel pissed off if you paid god knows how much money to go to a damn F1 race and 3 teams only raced??? i wouldnt go so far as to throw crap on the track thats just assinine and very unsafe to the guys that put their life on the line to perform for people to view...all in all...i respect the decision of the michelin teams and im on their side as well as the fans

changing the track the day of the race is against the rules, the only way they could've done that is if they didn't award any points, and then nobody would've raced because there were no points. if you watched wind tunnel today, peter windsor brought up a good point, the cars are locked up after qualifying and the teams can't touch them. also, he mentioned that the teams exaggerated the problem. a few days ago everyone on the board was all "run what you brung" with regard to the rule changes, but apparently that doesn't apply here? half of it is politiking BS, rumors about a break away series, and that the teams were just trying to find a reason to have a conflict with the FIA. the other thing is that, if the Bridgestones had the same problem, nobody would've cared. it happened in Spain and M. Schumacher withdrew, Ferrari didn't *****.

actually im with David hobbs on this one that the teams should be fined championship points rather than money. Not to the extreme effect that David hobbs wants which is to strip each team and driver on the michelin side of all their championship points but I think that would be the most fair penalty.

I am with the majority of Americans on something for once, I could care less about FIA or whatever they are called. Didn't even know there was a race today. I would be pretty pissed if I showed up to something like that though.

heres the scoop

Indianapolis speedways had been resurfaced since the last F1 race and Michelin came to the track with last years tire... they knew the surface had changed but didn’t do much tire practicing in preparation for the race over the year. In fact only 2 Michelin teams tested at Indianapolis speedway. 2 TEAMS consequently those two team had no problems at the track.

FIA is not responsible for what happened and they are only there to make and enforce the rules. It’s the team’s responsibility to the fans to put on the show.

They are the ones that the fans are there to see race and to hear them make excuses and blame everyone but themselves for not racing was really hideous

i talk crap and hate NASCAR but you know what? at least they understand that racing is for THE FANS and will always do whatever it takes to let the show go on...

F1 is nothing but a bunch of whinnying millionaires and I feel sorry for all the fans that paid so much money to get pwned, especially knowing that If it was held in California I would have most likely been there.

edgar,

i haven't watched the race yet (went to tahoe today ) and probably won't now. i was following the story yesterday during qualifying and on f1live.com. it's just disrespectful to the fans, the hosting track, and the teams sponsors.

honda occasionally has motors go very early in the race, should they be able to change motors at no penalty? ferrari cannot get their tires up to temp during one qualifying lap, should they be given extra laps?

just because the michelin tire problem may or may not affect 70% of the cars on track does not give them an out. their little protest is a black mark on the sport and they should be punished one way or another... maybe pay a fine large enough to refund every ticketholder.
