"A California Highway Patrol officer Sunday morning died from injuries he suffered when he was struck by a car in a hit and run collision Saturday night in east Oakland. The CHP is requesting the public's help in locating the car or cars believed to be involved.

Officer Brent Clearman, 33, joined the CHP in 2004. He died at Highland Hospital in Oakland Sunday morning, leaving behind a wife.

CHP Commissioner Mike Brown told reporters he knew Clearman. "I remember Brent. He went with us to Louisiana where he provided assistance to the Louisiana State Police following [Hurricane] Katrina. He went because of his skills as a sharpshooter. He spent 12 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, leaving as a staff sergeant. He was a good guy and a fine officer."

At About 10:30 p.m. Saturday, CHP officers were investigating a collision on the 66th Avenue on-ramp to Interstate 880 in Oakland. Clearman was on the left side of the roadway when a car hit him and then sped off on northbound I-880.

The CHP is looking for two cars. The one believed to have hit Clearman is described as a champagne-colored Buick LeSabre, model year 1992 to 1998. The car has driver-side grill damage and is missing its Buick hood emblem. Authorities are also seeking a second car, a silver Pontiac Grand Am model year 2000. The California license plate number is 5GAA778. Authorities said the Grand-Am was carjacked near the location where Clearman was struck and may be connected to the case.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of the cars or has information about the collision is asked to call the CHP at (800) TELL CHP or (800) 835-5247.

Clearman is the seventh CHP officer to die in the line of duty since last September. Besides Clearman, three others were from Northern California. Officer Andy Stevens was gunned down during a traffic stop outside of Woodland in November. Lt. Michael Walker of Vacaville died in a traffic accident in Santa Cruz in December and Officer Earl Scott was fatally shot near Salida in February."

its a damn shame.

Why didn't they follow the car/cars?

would you leave an officer down to follow a car when you being first on scene could be the difference between life and death for him?

by the way it sounded, they had more than just two officers. I am not a cop but investigations ussually have several officers for recreating the accident, directing traffic, etc.
