Santa Cruz is nice and all, but they couldn't pay me enough.
Long story short: grand poobah announced his (unofficial) plans for retirement and wants (a) my immediate supervisor to succeed him in his position and (b) me to succeed my supervisor in his position.
Upshot: I'd be moved from peon, past front line supervisor, to middle management in less than 3 years and become, potentially, one of the youngest (if not THE youngest) ever to be offered that position.
*intentionally omitted specifics for obvious reasons*
The immediate implications are obvious. The long term implications would be that I'd be in a position to become grand poobah in my late 40s.. about 15 years younger than the last 5 grand poobahs.
It's an interesting study into the modern workforce. Baby-boomers are sticking around longer occupying a large segment of the workforce and, as they promote out of the workforce, they leave a substantial vacuum of experience and qualification. Instead of a continuous fluidity to the turnover cycle there's a very abrupt and sharp drop off in knowledge, skills and abilities.
Should be a hell of a ride..
