The Mai Tai was supposedly invented at Trader Vic's in Oakland California sometime around 1944. This was disputed by the Beachcomber's of Oakland claiming to have invented it 10 years earlier however they tasted quite different. My Grandmother would go to Trader Vic's to meet with her, soon to be husband, when he was on shore leave. She claimed that Trader Vic's was a "working man's establishment" and he catered to longshoremen cashing their paychecks when they came to port. Vic wanted to class up the joint and politely told the longshoremen they where no longer welcome.

Random conversations with my 94 year old Grandmother kick ***. By the way she drinks Old Crow like it's water and is a better shot with a 1911 than I am!
