I didn't have too much problems when we lived in our apartment out here. The only problem with Natomas is that you've got a bunch of nice apartments filled with people who have nice *** cars and we're just close enough that the "DONK" cars from the ghetto can get to the complexes and jack your stuff. And sadly, I think you're going to have issues at pretty much any apartment in Sac and most other cities as well.
My wife and I lived in a complex called Adagio for about a year and a half before we bought our house. The place is a little pricey - in 2001 we were paying $1000/mo for a 1 bed and I'm not sure what rent is like there now. We only had one car break-in. Someone stole the stereo out of my wife's integra so we bought an alarm, replaced it with something nicer and never had another problem.
Benefits of this complex:
Really nice apartments. Our place was 830sq ft, had two balconies, 1 bed with walkin closet, 1 bath, wood burning fire place, vaulted ceilings, small storage closet on one balcony. Detached one car garage (with remote). Community is gated, the management is pretty kick *** - they have regular parties at their beautiful club house that are for all residents + guests and they turn in to these huge bashes at the pool for Cinco and Halloween typically (did then at least). The grounds are very nice and well maintained. Place has two pools, two hot tubs, a sauna, a work out room (that's actually pretty decent), half court basketball (Peja lived there when we did) and a volley ball court. Most of the women who live in the complex are drop-dead gorgeous, the pool is a good place to be. The complex is part rental for long term or group stays, so when the girls volleyball teams come to town for their competitions at Arco, guess where most of them stay?
negs: Rent is a bit on the high side, lights were always burnt out on walk ways, so if you were a woman walking at night was uncomfortable. I know my neighbor didn't like it. As time went on, parking got to be an issue if you had an extra car (so you'd have one in the garage and try to find a spot in the gates for the other). You can't use your garage strictly for storage though you CAN sublease a garage from another resident or get an additional garage from management if they have one and use that for your storage and stuff. One guy used an extra garage as a workshop for the woodwork he did.
Other places that are nice: Miramonte and Trovas - they're out on Truxel by the Raley's where we meet on the weekends.
You might also consider looking around to rent a house. Most rents in the area aren't that much higher (if they even are higher) than an apartment...

Yeah, Adagio was cool, I vouch for them too; however, it is close to the heart of the ghetto. Less than 5 blocks down the street you have guys dealing drugs.
Miramonte and Trovas are OK but car break-ins have been a huge problem over the 2 years I have lived there. My previous car was broken into twice before I got a garage.
Tuscaro apartments are OK as well. The problem there are ants. The walls are too thin as well. I actually broke my lease there and moved out because the old chinese couple next door were too loud (go figure? -- They would watch chinese TV till 3am!)

Another place I thought of when I was driving in was called the Fremont. It's not in Natomas, but downtown at 17th and P. Place is gangster. LOVE it there.
Also, check out some of the high rises downtown. They have some studio's on some higher floors, no secured parking though the do have a parking garage that's decent.

They're supposed to be really nice. I walked through them when they were under construction and it was really nice looking.
